After seven snippets, time for the first snap question. I am planning to ask some questions like this now and then. I do not promise to follow majority vote but will take note of preferences and comments. So help my intelligence department a bit and don’t hesitate and make your vote!

My thinking process was like this; It’s a game in the future = no black/white. B was a bit too detailed and such. D a bit too realistic for my taste. So A it was.
Well, I voted for “B” but ernie has a good point that it’s a game about the future. I’m curious why all the options crop out some of the head (e.g. the hair). With the cropped and zoomed-in portrait, I liked the lower detail and hence the black & white — it makes me the least uncomfortable to look at.
I like to be secretive during early development, thats why everything is just bits and parts without giving the full picture :)
Thanks for sharing your motivation its much more helpfull than just a vote.
@tortuga,
Any in-game portraits out there on the internet that make you feel comfortable (as opposed to uncomforable) ?
Sorry, I had a typo in my last, I voted for “C” originally. I would have voted for “B” second, though ;)
Coming back to this a little more completely: “A” looks too much like someone’s webcam or selfie, and maybe the same with “D”. When I thought more about this, I guess a portrait which is looking at the viewer is what made me uncomfortable.
But I could be an anomaly about this. I seem to like the slightly cartoony style, or at least not the photo-realistic. The ATG portraits were satisfactory to me. The Barbarossa banner at the top of this page has a cartoon looking right at us but it’s a very nice graphic.
But portraits have never been something I judge a game by, so maybe I’m not a good source as a critic.
Thanks for the reply.
Scientific research has shown a phenomenon known as the Uncanny Valley.

Basically it means that if you go for realistic it has to be almost perfect otherwise it will trigger a sort of instinctive somethings-wrong reflex.
Its of course all stats and averages and our brains all work differently :)
I like the black and white photograph look. The other pics are creepy. Puppet Master feel.
Is this somewhat like Emperor of the Fading Sun? You could really enhance the basic structure of that earlier game type. Look forward to the final product.
Hi Russ,
There might be some similarities (economy, research, trade, military units, leaders), but in the end it will be really different to Fading Suns. The whole approach is different and will feel more of a cross between a 4X and Grognard wargame. Honestely SE1 is shaping up like a game that is not going to be very comparable within anything else out there. :)
best wishes, Vic
Excellent! Will we be able to hop from planet to planet in ships as well? Maybe I dig too much? Wink.
Email capability of course?
SE1 will take place on a single planet. And yes of course it will come with PBEM and hotseat multiplayer!
Great! Look forward to it.
Thanks, Russ
Thanks for responding to the poll everybody!
I am staying secretive, but it has been informative.
I don’t much care, but I want the graphics of leaders to be consistent with the rest of the graphics. I like the simple cartoon style in ATG very much.
