Shadow Empire Design Snippet #2

Snippet #2: Ethanis Minor
planet2
Shadow Empire is a game situated in the ruins of a once great Galactic Republic. Some planets will sport life, some will not. Like Ethanis Minor shown above. Its atmosphere is non compatible with earth life, nor being a very young planet, has its evolution yet brought forth life of its own. All farming on Ethanis Minor will have to be done under domes and personnel and troops out in the open will have to wear breathing masks at all times.

    Hi Vic,
Keep the snippets coming. You mentioned you were designing to combine the strongest game play points of ATG and DC. Will this include some type of economics?

  2. vic says:

    Hi Chris,
The plan is it will have an economics system slightly more intricate than that of ATG. There are raw resources, food and workers for sure. Also the logistics system is being overhauled, where in DC and ATG it used to be the case the HQs provided the transport power for moving goods and supplies (in many cases as by magic) in Shadow Empire it will be logistical facilities that will cast a spidery network of logistics over your territories allowing for goods or replacement troops to move from one point to another.

Have you decided what scale the hexes will be?

  4. vic says:

The idea is planetary conquest, so the hexes will be quite big. Think of something like 200km hexes and 2 month turns. That seems to me the best for having meaningfull long term demographic developments (60 rounds = 10 years) and still a scale that can do realistic operational warfare.

  5. Chris says:

When a planet is generated are you planning on having multiple factions conducting operational warfare?

    Vic,

Very exited about this new design. I think it’s a great direction.

P.S. If you are looking for some inspiration, my second favorate computer game of all time (behind Advanced Tactics) had a sci fi theme that was very interesting and it was mostly a game of planetary conquest. It was called Emperor of the Fading Suns, check it out if you have the chance.

    Hi Chris,

The idea is to have multiple major regimes opposing you. Either AI or Human controlled. Furthermore loads of minor regimes will provide an initial speed bump for the land grab phase.

    Hi Grumpy,

Of course I know that game :) its very close to the Dune universe imho. Shadow Empire will however take place on a single planet starting at a post-apocalyptic fallen tech level. If all works out the plan is to make Shadow Empire 2 move out into higher technology and interstellar warfare. But its already a huge project so one thing at a time.

Will post a new snippet this week!

    Best wishes,
    Vic

Not a big sci fan fan but I’ll of course play this. It will add some interesting wrinkles.

But I do hope the engine gets ported to 20th century warfare eventually ;)

  9. vic says:

    Hi Beltsman,

Although its going to technically be Sci-Fi, in practice the low technology post-apocalyptic start is going to lead up to game mostly played in a tech era that will very much resemble WW2 era warfare.

My prediction is if you like the ATG random games your going to like this game. If you liked the DC games you might like it, but needlessly to say there is no historical simulation going on in Shadow Empire.

However I am trying to implement “universal” concepts well known to historical enthusiasts into this game.

On the slider of gamey to serious simulation I’d like Shadow Empire to err on the side of the latter.

    Best wishes,
    Vic
