Map File Editor

Basics

Here you can design your maps. It is a straightforward process.

Brief explanation of everything you can press and do here follows…

1. Exit

Exits you back to main menu if advanced editor is blocked. Otherwise you go to scenario setup screen which gives you the option to modify this map in the advanced editor (not advised!)

2. Options

The current screen inside the map editor. As shown in the screeny above. The place to configure the dimensions and meta data of the map.

3. Map

The other screen inside the map editor. Shown in screeny further below. The place to actually draw landscapes and stuff.

4. Load Map

Clear current memory and load a fresh map. See technical details above as well.

5. Save Map

Saves it. See technical details above as well.

6. New Map

Clears current memory and allows you to create a new map and specify the dimensions for this map.

7. Different map dimension mutation buttons

These options allow you to make the map larger or smaller in a specific direction.

8. (Re)load & Remove overlay

Very usefull function. Allows you to load a .jpg file (located somewhere in the graphics/ directory) and overlays and stretches it on top of your current map as a semi-transparent layer. Great aid to design maps. Use the 'Remove' button to remove the overlay you have loaded.

9. Replace

The other screen inside the map editor. Shown in screeny further below. The place to quickly modify maps by for example replacing all light forest by heavy forest.

10. Change Designer

Not only for vanity. It helps to locate a designer as well.

11. Change Map Version

If you update a map you've already shared with others you should update the version number so others are aware changes have been made.

12. Map name

The name of the map. Just for administrative purposes.

13. Change VP of Hex

Allows you to remove VP from selected hex or add points. Keep in mind importing the VP settings is optional once you load a map into the simple editor.

14. Go to Fill mode

If you have selected a drawing mode (.15) then you can paint 1 hex at a time. Going to fill mode fills all hexes that are the same when you click a hex.

15. Pick Draw Type

Opens a popup for you can select a drawing mode. After selecting you can draw on the map by clicking on a hex.

Note that for bridges, rivers and road you need to right click on a hex and then left click on a neighbour of that hex. Since roads and rivers are directional. For landscapes and locations just left clicking a hex will suffice.

16. End Drawing Mode

Remove any drawing mode you had selected in step 15. You can now safely click the map without changing it.

17. Rename location

Change the name of the selected location. Only appears if a location is present. (will hide Change hex name)

18. Delete location

If hex selected has a location you can now delete it. Remember that deleting a location removes the LOCATION DATA but not the LANDSCAPE DATA, you'll still have to paint over the place. This can be error prone if you do not pay attention to where you delete towns.

19. Set Labels

Put location names on the map.

20. Remove Labels

Removes all labels.

21. Change Hex Name

Will only appear if no location presence. Allows you to set a label to the hex. If a river is present in the hex the label will be coloured blue when rendered.

This is the drawing mode selector popup that will show it self after you have clicked on button .15.

22. WHAT?

Here you can select what kind of thing you want to draw on the map: LandscapeTypes, RiverTypes, RoadTypes, etc…

Obligatory selection.

213. SECOND COLUMN

Here you can select a specific kind of WHAT? you are drawing. For example if you had selected LandscapeTypes in .20 then you can now select here if you want to draw marsh, forest or plains.

24. THIRD COLUMN

This column only shows up for LandscapeTypes and allows you to pick a specific sprite for the selected LandscapeType.

25. OK

Confirm your selection. Remember if you want to stop drawing on the map use button #16.

Note on areaslots

You should NOT use the areaslots. They go against the concept of modular design. However I left them in for unforseen reasons.

Here there are tools available to quickly change all hexes of a certain type of hex on the map.

26. The different tabs to replace Landscape Type, River Type, Road Type, Location Type

Allows you to select a certain type and specify what it has to be changed to. Be sure to save your map before using these.

27. The tab for 'operations'

Only one operation available for the moment (Reset Loc Gfx) but I could add more special ops in the future.

28. Reset Location Type Gfx

Every Location Type has its own default Landscape Type and sprite. When you are painting locations on the map these defaults will be used to also change their hexes. However it is possible to overpaint them later on with a different landscape type and/or sprite. This button resets all hexes with a location to the default landscapetype and sprite for the locationtype of that location.
