Playing with Alliances

Germany is allied with Italy (once awake) and the West is allied with China and the US once the West is at war with Japan. In the picture below, you can see the border between Italy and Germany. Note that it is faded relative to the other borders nearby. This indicates that the countries are allies. Note the the alliance between Italy and Germany does not start until Italy is awake so you will see the unallied border when the scenario starts. Alli…

In the standard game, Poland is Germany's first battle. The 'No Munich' variant starts the war with the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Poland can then be attacked by either Germany and the Soviet Union. Both can also pledge support to Poland. If Germany atta…

Germany wants to production Level Bombers for raids on the West. Production in Berlin is selected and the German player can see that each Level Bomber will cost 1 pilot and 2 engines. These are called pre-cursors and they vary by unit type. Light tanks, for example, cost 1 engine and 1 steel.

For more details, see WAW production walk through

I. Production

Production is as critical to winning as the correct deployment of units. The World at War scenario uses a new process to build units:

1. Players must build pre-cursors to production. There are five: (a) pilots, (b) hulls,

Research

I. Tactical Research.

Research on unit upgrades (e.g., Infantry II), requires “research points”. Research points can only be created in a research center. Germany, Japan, Russia and Great Britain each start the game with 1 research center. The US has 2 and there is a research center in Denmark. Research centers can also be built for 500 political points. A research center produces 100 research points each round. Level II research costs 400 RP, level III is 600 RP and level IV i…

Thoughts on Game Play

1. Unit Familiarity.

The units are different from the standard game. In general, tanks move further and are more effective in the plains but less effective elsewhere. Bridges and planes are more fragile. Germany's openning battle against Poland is a nice set-piece and can be played multiple times to get use to the unit mix. Play the 'No Poland' or 'No Munich' variants if you would like to start with a set-piece with France or Czechoslovakia respectively.

1. Infantry

All infantry travel at foot speed which is slow (3 hexes in most terrain, 4 in road), but they do not have as many movement penalties in rough terrain. Level I attacks twice, Level II 3 times, Level III 4 times and Level IV 5 times per round. All infantry require a manpower point to build. They also have

Variants

Variants assume and alternate history between the wars. Some favor the Axis, some favor the Allies. There is also an option that allows for random variant selection.

No Poland

This assumes that the Soviets one the Battle of Warsaw in 1920 and crushed the fledgling Polish states. The Soviets now control Warsaw. The Allied Powers, in an attempt to thwart the further spread of communism, give Germany back both Danzig and Silesia which were previously ceded at Versaille.
