Shadow Empire Design Sketches #2

Here are a sneak peak into the nation profile fields. Note that the arrows actually indicate a negative feedback loop. So for example a high ‘democracy’ profile diminishes the ‘totalitarian’ profile. This system means a nation can only have one profile at a really high score in each circle. Note that this is part of a bigger system and what you are seeing here are just the ‘cap the maximum scores’ rules. Capping is important because we don’t want players to have top scores on everything. Opening certain doors means closing certain others. The profile scores themselves, if high enough, will provide you with bonuses, special action cards and can trigger special stories.

    I am not looking to much to other games with the design of Shadow Empire. It is my desire to create something unique that captures the essence of leading a small nation back to power and civilization. Mostly by military means. However to have a serious army you’ll need organisational backup (logistics, R&D) to keep it in fighting shape as well as an economy that provides you with the recruits, industrial base and raw materials to build it and supply it with replacement troops, ammo and fuel.

    Vic, are the top level arrow saying that the particular circle does not like all that is in the other. Or more like “militarism” does not like “cleverness”?

    Hi Adam,

    I think your not the only one who got confused. In fact each arrow indicates a “limiting” influence from A -> B. So if “militarism” is HIGH it will exercise a LIMITING pressure on “cleverness”.

    Or in other words in case of an arrow from A -> B : if A is high B cannot get (or will not stay) high as well.
